International exchange activities

International partner Institutions

We have concluded academic exchange agreements with a total of thirty-nine universities and research institutes in thirteen countries, and we are working hard to improve our level of education and research through mutual exchanges between faculty and students as well as implementing joint research, exchange of academic information and other activities.

International exchange programs and their achievements

Each of Kitasato University's departments actively engage in international exchange programs, and their educational and research activities are spreading around the world.

International exchange programs within each department

School of Pharmacy
(1) Academic exchange program with the University of Kentucky
 
The Kitasato University School of Pharmacy concluded an international academic exchange agreement with the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy in 1989, and the two universities have participated in exchange programs ever since. We offer a two-week study abroad course to interested sixth-year students. Participants learn about the realities of American healthcare and the work American pharmacists perform through tours of University of Kentucky hospitals and local pharmacies as well as through experiencing the work of clinical pharmacists during team rounds and at conferences. Prior to the course, University of Kentucky clinical faculty members hold lectures and seminars in English at Kitasato University. Kitasato University has also begun conducting courses for University of Kentucky students in Japan in the spirit of mutual exchange.
 
(2) Academic exchange program with the University of Iowa
 
The Kitasato University School of Pharmacy conducts a two-week training program at the University of Iowa for interested sixth-year students. Participants attend lectures on the American healthcare system and pharmacotherapeutics. They also “shadow” a sixth-year student in the College of Pharmacy receiving clinical training for a day at University of Iowa hospitals near the university and area pharmacies, and join medical team rounds. Filled with opportunities for learning, the program gives participants the chance to experience American medical care as it is practiced in real life. Prior to the start of the program, University of Iowa College of Pharmacy clinical faculty members come to Kitasato University to give lessons in English for fourth- and fifth-year students in the School of Pharmacy. In 2015, Kitasato University begun to accept University of Iowa College of Pharmacy students for a training program in Japan, establishing a truly mutual exchange between the two universities.
 
(3) Academic exchange program with Harvard University
 
Our Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences Biostatistics Course initiated an academic exchange program with the Department of Biostatistics in the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in January 2000 as a way of enhancing its own education and research. This program provides students with valuable opportunities and knowledge; Harvard University faculty members conduct lectures at Kitasato University, and our graduate students also have the chance to visit and attend lectures at Harvard University.

School of Veterinary Medicine
(1) Academic exchange programs with three American universities
 
Our Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has concluded academic exchange agreements with three U.S. universities (Purdue University, the University of Tennessee, and the University of Georgia) and dispatches fifth-year students to these universities each summer vacation. Students train under the guidance of teachers specializing in fields such as small animal internal medicine and surgery, large animal internal medicine and surgery, ophthalmology, and dermatology. In addition, one instructor from each university is usually invited to Kitasato University each year to hold lectures, courses and seminars, and students from these universities interested in studying veterinary medicine at Kitasato University come to the Towada Campus.
 
(2) Academic exchange program with Jilin University
 
Kitasato University School of Veterinary Medicine has concluded an international exchange agreement with the College of Veterinary Medicine at Jilin University in China. Students from Jilin University attend courses at Kitasato University.
 
(3) Exchange program with Mahanakorn University of Technology Faculty of Veterinary Medicine
 
Seven faculty members of the Mahanakorn University of Technology in Thailand have received PhD degrees from Kitasato University. Fifth-year students at Mahanakorn University of Technology study at Kitasato University for one month. Since the 2016 academic year, our fifth-year students have also studied veterinary medicine at the Mahanakorn University of Technology during the summer vacation.
 
(4) Exchange program with Konkuk University
 
Kitasato University School of Veterinary Medicine has concluded an international exchange agreement with Konkuk University College of Veterinary Medicine in South Korea.
 
(5) Japan Agricultural Exchange Council
 
The Japan Agricultural Exchange Council provides opportunities for long-term study at farms in Europe and the U.S.
 
(6) International Farmers Aid Association
 
The International Farmers Aid Association provides opportunities for long-term study at farms in the U.S.

School of Medicine
(1) Elective overseas apprenticeships
 
To cultivate physicians who possess global thinking by providing opportunities for international exchange in the field of medicine, our School of Medicine offers clinical clerkships. As part of this, sixth-year students may choose to spend up to nine weeks in an overseas apprenticeship.

School of Marine Biosciences
We signed a memorandum on exchange with the Institute of Marine Science at Burapha University in Thailand in the 2016 academic year to deepen international understanding between the two universities and enhance our education and research foundation. The School of Marine Biosciences plans to use this exchange agreement to develop more international exchange activities, promoting exchange between students.

School of Nursing
(1) Academic exchange program with the University of California, Los Angeles
 
The Kitasato University School of Nursing has had an academic exchange program with the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) since 1989. Both universities dispatch and accept faculty members and students every second year. During the school’s two-week study abroad summer program, students participate in lectures and seminars and also tour facilities. Around twenty students at a time take part in this highly popular study abroad program. When UCLA faculty members are invited to Japan, they hold lectures and we involve them in cultural exchange events.
 
(2) Academic exchange program with the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences
 

Since 2006, the Kitasato University School of Nursing has had academic exchanges with the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences, and both universities dispatch and accept faculty members and students. During the 2015 academic year, Kitasato University School of Nursing students participated in the second Mongolian study abroad trip. A month-long teacher study program for faculty members at the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences was launched in the following academic year, which helps improve nursing education in Mongolia. From 2008 to 2013, the School of Nursing provided distance learning to approximately 12 percent of all the nurses in Mongolia, in collaboration with the World Bank and the World Health Organization.
 
(3) Exchange program with the Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences
 

In June 2017, two students and two faculty members from the Department of Nursing at the Inland Norway University of Applied Sciences came to study in the Kitasato University School of Nursing. We are investigating the continuation of such exchanges.

International nursing exchange (Japanese Only)

School of Science
(1) International exchange program with Harvard University
 
Hoping to develop researchers with an international perspective, the Kitasato University School of Science engages in international exchanges with Harvard University, dispatching students to Harvard and receiving students from the university in turn every other year. Students in this exchange program attend lectures, visit laboratories, engage in discussions with other students and researchers, give speeches in English, and tour various facilities.
 
(2) International exchange program with Kingston University
 
The Kitasato University School of Science has started a new short-term study abroad program at Kingston University in the UK for three weeks from late February in 2017 and 2018. This original, science-oriented program reflects the request and needs of the School of Science. In addition to language lessons, participants tour science-related facilities, attend science classes at Kingston University, and listen to lectures on taking notes in English. Participating students are also required to write a report and give a presentation on a selected theme. As the students achieve these tasks, we aim to help them acquire language abilities and give them the necessary skills and experience related to scientific English they will need as future researchers.

School of Allied Health Sciences
(1) International academic exchange program with Thomas Jefferson University
 
With the goal of producing capable individuals who possess an international perspective and extensive expertise and can flourish in international society, the Kitasato University School of Allied Health Sciences and Thomas Jefferson University provide hospital and facility tours, lectures for the other university’s students, and undergraduate and research presentations. We established an international team medical care seminar conducted in English during the 2015 academic year, and students from both universities formed mixed teams. This initiative was expanded in the following academic year.
 
Mixed teams also were formed with students from Kitasato University’s School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy and School of Nursing, as well as students from Thomas Jefferson University, Charles University in the Czech Republic, and FH Campus Wien in Austria. The School of Allied Science plans to use its exchanges with Thomas Jefferson University to expand its international exchange programs, including adding students from universities in Asia to the above-mentioned team medical care seminar.

College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
(1) Short-term study abroad language program
 
The Kitasato University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has run a short-term study abroad language program since 2014. Students participate in a three-week homestay from February to March just prior to completing their first year of university education. The program is designed to prepare students for studying English in their major as well as studying abroad from the second year onward. It reinforces basic conversational abilities and provides them with language abilities related to their major. The program also deepens participants’ international understanding and allows them to engage in a variety of experiences not possible in Japan.
 
The University of New England in Australia was selected as the destination for the spring 2017 program. (The program was previously conducted at Northern Illinois University and the Florida Institute of Technology in the U.S.) The University of New England is in the beautiful city of Armidale, about a one-hour flight from Sydney. Class content covered general conversation, communication strategies, vocabulary and grammar. Students also chose a research topic and practiced giving presentations in English. They visited undergraduate departments and facilities at the University of New England, and went on trips to the sea, a zoo and multiple cultural facilities. Students were able to meet koalas, kangaroos and other animals, and experience the vast natural beauty of Australia. The homestay families they stayed with had cats and dogs and occasionally sheep and cows as well. On the last weekend before returning to Japan, the students enjoyed sightseeing and shopping in Sydney, one of the world’s most cosmopolitan cities.

Graduate School of Medical Sciences
Projects for promoting internationalization
 
(1) Support for students studying abroad and studying from abroad
 
The Kitasato University Graduate School of Medical Sciences provides support for its local students and international study abroad students (researchers and trainees) in two areas: (1) research exchange activities based on academic exchange agreements with scholarly institutions overseas, and (2) research exchange activities designed to create new academic exchange agreements with scholarly institutions overseas.

The Graduate School of Medical Sciences provides support for (1) educational and research exchange activities based on academic exchange agreements with scholarly institutions overseas, (2) educational and research exchange activities designed to create new academic exchange agreements with scholarly institutions overseas, and (3) other education and research and educational and research exchange activities that promote internationalization and improve the standard of education and research.

Graduate School of Infection Control Sciences
(1)Academic Exchange Agreement with Mahidol University (Kingdom of Thailand)

A mutual exchange of academic information is underway for collaborative research, dispatch of magisterial staff and students for the purpose of education, training and research, hosting events such as seminars and symposiums, printed publication, research paper, etc.

(2)Academic Exchange Agreement with Mahidol University (Kingdom of Thailand)

A mutual exchange of academic information takes place for collaborative research, dispatch of magisterial staff, researchers and students, hosting events such as seminars and symposiums.

(3)Academic Exchange Agreement with Jinan University (People's Republic of China)

A mutual academic exchange is in place for academic mutual visits for research promotion, hosting academic lecture presentation and short-and mid-term dispatch of Jinan University's magisterial staff, undergraduate and graduate students.

Oriental Medicine Research Center
The Oriental Medicine Research Center is one of two World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centres for Traditional Medicine in Japan, and the first in the country to receive this WHO designation. Each year the center welcomes researchers and administrative officials involved in traditional medicine from overseas, and they engage in clinical education and research regarding Chinese herbal medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion.

Affiliated hospitals
Kitasato University Hospital and Kitasato University East Hospital

Kitasato University Hospital and Kitasato University East Hospital have signed academic exchange agreements with two entities in China: Jilin University in Changchun, Jilin Province, and the Fudan University-affiliated Huashan Hospital in Shanghai. The hospitals welcome several trainees each year from these two schools, and also dispatch an academic exchange group once a year to these schools to hold classes and study.
 
The nursing departments from both hospitals also have an exchange arrangement with the Mayo Clinic in the U.S. once a year.
