1) 各種動物疾患についての病理組織診断学の構築. 家畜(牛, 馬, 豚, 山羊), 伴侶動物(犬, 猫), 野生動物(鹿, タヌキ, アナグマ, ノウサギ), 実験動物(マウス, ラット)の自然発生疾患(腫瘍, 感染症など)に関する診断病理学的研究を遂行しています. 2) 病態モデルミニブタを用いて, 動脈硬化, メタボ, 皮膚炎, ストレスなどの病理発生機序の解明や予防・治療法の開発を研究しています. 特にヒト型動脈硬化モデルマイクロミニピッグを用いて獣医循環器病理学、さらに腫瘍循環器学(Onco-cardiology)に貢献する基礎研究に取り組んでいます. 3) 狂犬病に関する病理学的研究を行っています. 狂犬病による死者は毎年約6万人ですが, 本疾患の発病機序については不明な点が多いです. 現在, 当研究室では諸外国の研究機関と協力しながら, 犬, 猫, 野生動物, 実験動物における ウイルスの侵入と排泄機構, 封入体の形成機序および脳に代わる新規診断法の開発に取り組んでいます. 4) 新生子の主に中枢神経系に発現する毒性変化に関する病理学的研究に取り組んでいます. 幼弱動物は成熟動物と比較して組織的に未発達で, 化学物質などの外来性刺激に高い感受性を示す傾向があります. 化学物質による幼弱動物への影響に関する研究データは乏しく, 化学物質により発現する形態学的変化の機序の解明は毒性病理学的に重要な意義を持ちます.
